Setting-Up a Backgammon Board

For informal players of backgammon, forgetting how to organize the backgammon board is such a convenience. Follow these directions and you will learn setting-up quickly. It is worth noting that it is the first important step in playing the game of backgammon.

Here are the basic steps:

  • 1. Fix the board on an even playing area between the competitors.
  • 2. Count the checkers to ensure that you have the correct number. The two players should have 15 of both colors, totaling 30 checkers.
  • 3. Understand backgammon terms. The 24 triangular sections where the checkers are first located and where they will proceed are known as Points.
  • 4. There are two boards namely the Home Board, which contains the home areas of the two players (the color of the checker determines your Home Board), and the Outer Board. The two boards are separated by the Bar.
  • 5. If you are playing serious backgammon, the Doubling Cube might be used, but it has no bearing on the initial positioning.
  • 6. Decide which player will represent which color.
  • 7. Position five checkers of your shade on the point nearest the Bar, but within your Home Board. Your opponent should do so on his area.
  • 8. Put a couple of your checkers on the Point furthest from the Bar, inside your opponent's Home Board. Your opponent must as well place his checkers on the same region in your area.
  • 9. Three of your checkers should now be situated on the second Point from the Bar, within the Outer Board on your area. Same action should be done by your opponent.
  • 10. The Point on the farthest side from the Bar should be filled with five of your checkers, but still inside our opponent's Outer Board. Similarly, your opponent should act on his five checkers.
  • 11. As an alternative, a system based on a method of valuing the Points should be utilized. Points are valued for every player (count is 1 to 24) beginning from the Home Board.
  • 12. The positioning of checkers proceeds in this manner: five checkers on Point 6, three for every Point 8, five again for every 13 Point, and a couple of checkers on every 24 Point.

Backgammon Pointers:

  • 1. Organizing the board of backgammon may look more complicated than it actually is.
  • 2. It is of no concern where the Home Board or Outer Board is located, as long as they are positioned on similar sides.

Before you can get your game of backgammon going, you need to understand and practice the importance of setting-up your backgammon board.
