Backgammon Vs Generals Game
Usually people would not compare a war into a board game as the general chaos of armed conflict does not make one think of a game. But depending on the game, the very idea of war and the strategy involved in it can be well compared to a board game. One of these board games is Chess which involves moving a player's piece to a prime position which eventually takes out the opposing player's pieces.
Then there is Backgammon which also has an aura around it that reminds you of war games. Backgammon with its element of chance and the possibility of a bad throw, which could be equaled into a disastrous decision in the battlefield, which when played in a broader picture shows the weakness of such a plan, is quite comparable to war games.
The generals move their pieces around, which represents soldiers as giant checkers pieces in the battlefield of possibility and a great opportunity to take advantage of in a battle. It is just the same as backgammon as each piece is move to attacked or counter attacked or just block the movements of your opponent or to defend your territory the basic beginnings of a conflicts begins to take form.
Right now, you are beginning to see some similarities like the movement of each piece during an offensive or its retreat to a safer area, or its movement into a better position to prepare for another offensive or a higher ground before attacking. It has a similarity to a war, with only a different set of rules. The main difference that can be considered is the dice, because you can never tell what will happen next until the dice is thrown, this action can also be considered to be an another element of war, that can be compared to diplomacy; the dice thrown by the player will be the determiner of the outcome, like what diplomats and politicians do.
Their main objective is to get in the optimum bargaining position that can make sure that you are the winner or if you are unfortunate enough, to be the loser because there is no draw in Backgammon. It is a fight to the very end.
With just a few comparisons between the two, we can now differentiate the similarities and differences between Backgammon and a real war. So the next time you are playing backgammon try to be imaginative and possibly it will help you win your match.
