Backgammon Variance
In a typical game of backgammon there are thousands of small decisions to be made. There are very little, if any, moves that can be considered to be ultimately right. Every move has many versions and many tips you find on the internet can not only differ from each other but even contradict each other.
Backgammon is a game that has almost limitless possibilities. The 'correct' play depends mostly on the way you play the game and your approach to it. Just go to any online backgammon club and ask its members how they consider their style of playing. Each will have a slightly different definition to it.
There are players that tend to play loose and aggressive. Meaning that they leave more open pieces and tend to move ahead faster. Note that those are not reckless, wild moves, but rather well calculated risks and chances. There are also players that play tighter and in a 'closed' manner. Meaning that they try to build as many primes as possible and close as many points. Also it is important to understand that this moves are not cowardly or conservative but organized and well calculated. A good player can play any style he wants as he can adjust his game and play smart.
