Backgammon Tournaments
Playing in a backgammon tournament is more complicated than playing a solitary backgammon game which is largely due to the score's match.
In backgammon tournaments, the decision is normally made by single elimination matches like the way elimination matches are done in tennis tournaments. Challengers are grouped by pairs and every pair will play a series of matches to decide which players will go to the next round of competition.
All players that are eliminated from an early stage of the competition often go into a consolation match and if the tournament is a big one, like the World Championships, there will be matches for the second consolation match.
Players are playing matches to distinctly define the number of points. Last Chance events and Consolation are always played with a smaller number of points earned by players than in the main event.
Points are being awarded in standard the manner which is 1 for single game, 2 for gammon and 3 for backgammon. Often a doubling cube is used by players so the winner will receive the value of the game multiplied by the end value of the doubling cube.
Hence, if a player wins a game of gammon with cube on number 4, he or she will win eight points. If the players were playing a match to seven points, the match would be completed after just one game.
Tournament matches are regularly played to an odd number point and with the Crawford rule most often always put to use. In the rules from Crawford, if one player acquires a score one point short from the match, no player can offer a double in the succeeding game.
A single game without doubling is often called the Crawford game. After this game of Crawford, and if the match has not yet been determined, the doubling cube is again available for use and the player who is behind in the game should do double at his first chance. An automatic doubles, raccoons, beavers and the Rules of Jacoby are never used in playing matches.
There is no available bonus for winning number points that exceed more than necessary to win the match. When players are playing for a specific number of points, the first player to reach the specified number of points will be the winner. It does not really matter if he or she wins more than what is expected, the goal is simply to win the match, and what is irrelevant is the winning margin. Thus a game to 7 points is won if the final outcome is 64 to 1 or simply 7 to 6.
The key point to backgammon tournaments is the score. It dominates all aspects of a backgammon tournament.
