Backgammon Strategy

The game of backgammon is basically a race, whoever bears-off all his or her checkers first wins the game. Here are some basic strategies for backgammon.

1. Anchoring

This strategy is established as a defensive point from the player's board to his or her opponent's board. This is act of landing on a good spot on the board, the choice is yours to whether you can get hit or it can prevent your opponent from making all his or her pieces make it home.

At the beginning of the game you can already establish an anchor with higher points.

2. Blocking and Priming

These are the strategy for building a point without gaps between your points; this can be done directly in front of your opponent's checkers but located in your board. A prime is called when you have six points in a row. Having a prime can be difficult for your enemy to escape, provided that you maintain that structure.

3. Communication

This is the strategy for distributing the checkers from your board to keep the six pip of each checkers. This enables players to cover his or her point from a nearby opponent.

4. Distribution

The strategy of Distribution is the act of knowing how evenly you can distribute your checkers with the points that you occupy. The best move is to have at least 3 checkers on two points rather than having 4 checkers on each point. Having 6 checkers on one point is a disadvantage.

5. Diversification

The strategy of Diversification is the spreading of checker's to the player's board to increase the chances of having good rolls on future turns.

6. Duplication

This is a technique for decreasing the number of good rolls that your opponent can have. You can do this by placing your checkers on the desired point of your opponent. Choose the same good value of point that your opponent wants as well.

7. Exposure

At an early stage of the game it is best to leave a blot so you can make a stronger defense or offense. Remember that these blots are also called slots. A slot is one checker that is exposed on a point that the opponent may enter and capture. As much as possible reduce the number of slots that you have.

8. Hitting

This is the most awarding strategy that a player can do, that is to hit your opponent's checkers. However, attack only if you are sensing a more advantageous hit.

Nevertheless, avoid hitting your opponent's checkers if your checkers are more valuable. With as much as possible strategy it is best to hit and then cover than hitting your opponent with open checkers.
