Backgammon Equity

In some lessons at backgammon you often heard the word "equity". "Equity" is a very important building block for learning everything about backgammon; still, this concept of equity stays a mystery for most players.

Here are the basic concepts of game equity and match equity in the game Backgammon.

Match Equity

1) Terminology For other players to know, match equity is frequently called as match-winning chances or with the initials MWC.

Some articles already mentioned that the odds of winning in backgammon of a 3-point match with a score of 2-0 Crawford are 25%. The entire match equity is identified in terms of "points away" since, it really doesn't matter if the score reaches 24-22 or 2-0 to 3 in a match point of 25.

For noting the score of the player there is no specific standard notation for it. We will only use notation such as -a or -b to describe as "We need a points, and the other player needs b". The letter "C" which is located at the end will mean that this is a Crawford game and the letters "pC" will be identified as Crawford game already passed.

2) Gammon Frequency Gammon frequency evidently has an impact on match equity. However, there are some conflicts with other experts regarding gammon frequency. Both Hal Heinrich and Kit Woolsey did a study with regard to match equities in the year1990, and they have observed that the gammon frequency in backgammon game played to determine without doubling cube that was about 20%.

In a more recent work it tends to support a higher frequency of gammon. Let us take that there is a 20% gammon frequency for making this article balance. In the end, we will see the outcome if there is a higher gammon frequency.

3) Gammons and Match equity in backgammon Let us consider the example score given -2/-1C. And the frequency of the cubeless gammon is at 20%. Here are the possible results from the example:

A player wins a gammon game with 10% of the time. Again a player wins this game 40% of the time without a gammon and again a player wins the next game of gammon with 50% of the time.

The match equity when added all the percentage together is at -2/-1C and 30%.

4) Cube Leverage Let us take for example our chances of winning with each side that needs to win the game with the cube.

In simply learning match equity does not necessarily mean that we have accomplished much. These match equities are simply here to learn for learning again further concepts.
